1) Spiritual - BibleProject : Character in Biblical Narrative
Relatable struggles allow the authors of Bible to show what it means to be human. We see Biblical characters through minimal detail, so when it is there it has meaning.
-
For example, any descriptions of physical features is likely symbolic of the person's moral character
- Saul is tall = love of power and status
- David is short = humbly accepts low status.
- Esau is hairy = animal-like behavior
- Jacob has smooth skin = Deceptive and slippery behavior
-
Names also matter!
- 'Abraham' = Father of a Multitude
- 'Jacob' = Deceiver
- 'Ruth' = Refreshment
- 'Saul' = The one asked for = The flawed king people requested
-
Thoughts or Motives are rarely spelled out
-
Characters are complex and never perfect
"The Bible offers us realistic portraits of compromised people like ourselves. The real surprise is that God keeps working with them despite their failures." // Jon Collins + Tim Mackie
